Math: This week in Math we will begin our lesson on number patterns and the coordinate plane. Students will be doing many  hands on activities to further their knowledge of graphing ordered pairs and finding the rules to number patterns to figure out the relationship between the two concepts.

Students and Parents can visit the website www.learnzillion.com to learn more. Just type in the standard 5.OA.3 to explore what we’re doing this week!

Students will continue working on Rocket Math this week in which they will have daily 1 minute tests on multiplication facts. Students will benefit greatly from extra practice at home.
ELA info, Specials schedule, and Contact info on back.
ELA: Unit One: Why and how do we play with language?
Engelbrecht:
  • Language: We will be focusing on Word Relationships; synonyms, antonyms, and homonymS..
  • Reading: We will be reading the poem “Casey at the Bat” and We are the Ship. We will be discussing the theme, rhyme scheme, mood, and point of view. Wonder is our read aloud. We will be finishing up with character traits and introducing character conflict.
  • Writing: We will be working on our Fall Writing Assessment. Students will be writing an informational piece on the creative person they have been researching.
  • Due to the short week there will not be a reading log.
  • AR: Students should be at or around 40%.
  • Friday we will be watching The Phantom Tollbooth and comparing it to the book. Students may bring a snack and drink.
Sandusky:
  • No reading logs this week! (Unless your child wants extra credit; 5points, due Friday)
  • We are finishing The Phantom Tollbooth, and hopefully will be able to watch the movie on Friday if there’s enough time.
  • Our language piece this week will focus on affixes and Greek and Latin roots.
Shultz:
  • First week of book logs went better than expected. Please remember to have your child read each night (by himself or with you) and write down whatever time he spends.
  • Reading: Due to technology issues last week, we did not finish typing our biopoems, so we will do that this week, along with our fall writing assessment and the introduction of RL5.2--understanding theme
  • Language: We are learning about personification and idioms this week (those funny sayings we all have, but no one knows why). Share some favorites with your student!
  • AR: Students should be at 33% of their goal this week.
  • Read Aloud: Our first read aloud will be Wonder by RJ Polaccio.
