9/26 Newsletter

Upcoming Events:
-September 30th-Cash for Critters

Attention Parents:
*We are lucky to have enough headphones for our students! However, these are shared headphones. If you would prefer to send your child with his or her own earbuds, please feel free.

*We can always use playground equipment! If you would like to donate a basketball, kickball, soccer ball, jump ropes, or sidewalk chalk we would love to have them!

*Mid Quarter grades were sent home today. Please sign the grade card and return it by Friday to your homeroom teacher. Students who do not return it by Friday will not get Fun Friday.

Math/ Science
Mrs. Ottaway

Homeroom:
*We are going on field trip October 12th to Meramec Caverns.  Please sign and return the permission slip and $5.00 if you have not done so already.

Science:
*We will continue to discuss force, motion, friction, gravity, magnetism, and simple machines.

Math:
*We will round decimals to any place value.  We will review and assess on all concepts we have discussed so far this year, including place value, expanded, unit, and words forms, comparing decimals fractions, and rounding decimals.

Please have your student study his/her multiplication facts. With just 5 minutes a night studying they will become fluent. There will typically be a weekly timed test which counts toward their grade.

This week we will

≥ Have homework writing word forms of decimals. Homework is due on Thursday.

≥ Begin math lessons on comparing and rounding decimals.

≥ Learn about Force and Motion including the forces acting on us.
Mrs. Watson

Science:
This week we will continue our unit on Force and Motion.
Students will learn about friction, gravity, magnetism, and simple machines.

Math:
This week in math we will continue our unit in Place Value. Students will work with reading and writing decimals as well as comparing decimals.
Some students will be bringing home a missing assignments report that must be signed and returned by Friday.

Homework:
This week’s homework will be over multiplying and dividing powers of ten. It is due THURSDAY and is worth 10 points.

ELA
Engelbrecht:
  • We will be continuing conflict and theme.
  • In language this week we will be focusing on synonyms, antonyms, and homophones.
  • READING LOGS ARE DUE MONDAY 10/3. Students will miss Fun Friday if their reading log is not turned in and receive a zero.
  • I sent home the STAR report and AR report today in Monday folders. If your child's AR comprehension is below 80%, it is highlighted in pink. I am encouraging them to bring home a picture book (in their level) and read it and come in ready to test so they can bring up their percentage.
  • We will test on our read aloud, Wonder, this week it is worth 11 points.
Sandusky:
  • Reading Logs due Friday.
  • We have a project on Donorschoose.org to raise money for comfortable seating for our Book Nook. I will send out an email later this week with the link and information!
  • Still a few more spots left in Book Club, child must have a signed permission slip!
  • Finishing biographies, writing a biopoem about famous historical person, and creating an infographic about the person of interest. Students will have rubrics for each of these before beginning activity.
  • Circle my name above and bring back on Tuesday for 2 points extra credit towards language grade.
  • Language: conventions (capitalization, spelling, & punctuation). Please note that students miss points when not applying these things in personal writing.
Shultz:
  • Reading logs are due Friday!!!!! These are for a grade!!!
  • AR/Fluency: Continue daily fluency activity; students should be at least to 50% of goal.
  • Unit activity: Reading for theme.
  • Spelling: None: Parents initial here for 2 extra credit points in Shultz .________.
  • Reading: We will visit the library on Tuesday. All books need to be returned on this day! Continue our read aloud of Wonder.
  • Language: Using and identifying figurative language. Test on Friday (identify and explain similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, and idioms)
