ELA: Unit One: Why and how do we play with language?
Engelbrecht:
  • Language:We will finish up Figurative Language (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, idiom/adage/proverb, alliteration, and onomatopoeias) seek opportunities at home to point these things out to your children.
  • Reading: We will begin The Phantom Tollbooth and Wonder is our read aloud. We will be finishing up with character traits and introducing character conflict.
  • Writing: Publish Biopoem about creative thinker
  • Don’t forget to turn in reading logs! They are worth 5 points.
Sandusky:
  • Reading Logs due Friday.
  • Reading- We’ve started the Phantom Tollbooth novel study in class. Each day we read the book and analyze different characters, story elements, or author’s intent. After our two chapters for the day students have a ‘quiz’ over the material that is 4 questions long. If your child is absent, it’s important that they take a book home the following day to make up what they’ve missed. The conversations in the classroom are what make novel studies fun! However, since it’s an ongoing project, they must be caught up in order to stay with the class that day.
  • Language: We will be focusing on Word Relationships; synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms since Phantom Tollbooth ‘plays’ with so many of these types of words.
  • Writing- We will be writing in our journals this week about our reading material, I will be looking specifically at capitalization this week in their writing.
Shultz:
  • First week of book logs! Read some each night and log it! Turn it in on Friday! Worth 5 points each week. Not extra credit!
  • Reading: This is the last week of our focus on reading standard RI5.1--Reading information text and quoting accurately when referring to the text. Our inventor profile project will be complete soon and then we will use the information we gathered to create a biopoem.
  • Language: We will work on spelling a select group of words with the long a sound and a few “no excuses” 5th grade words. We are also working on language standard 5.5 and identifying figurative language.
  • AR: Students will visit the library each Monday. We will be discussing AR goals, graphing our progress, and hopefully taking a test this week!
  • Read Aloud: Our first read aloud will be Wonder by RJ Polaccio.
