11/2 Newsletter


Upcoming Events:
  • Students are asked to participate in an extra credit assignment that will support our service learning project. The expectations for the Veteran’s Day essay are in Monday folders.
  • Thursday November 5th- 10:00 Girls Championship Basketball game at the Middle School-Permission slips due Wednesday 11/4.
  • November 11th is Veteran’s Day assembly. Begins at 1:45.
Mrs. Shultz’s classroom is available from 7:20 am to 7:50 am Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students who need extra reading time or help with homework are welcome.
Attention Parents:
*Some students are beginning to run out of pencils. If you have the opportunity, you may ask how your student’s pencil supply is and send a few extra if you can. Thanks!

*If you have any photos of Veterans you would like to share with us for our Veteran’s Day slideshow, please send them with your student in an envelope so that we can return it to you. You may also email your photo to nsiders@stjschools.org.

Science
This week we will be reviewing the 6 kingdoms of living things as well as the 5 vertebrate classes.  We will be exploring  plants.  We will focus on the 4 main parts and their functions (roots, stem, leaves, flower).
    We will begin working on a project where the students  will create their own vertebrate animal based on the characteristics of 2 or more vertebrate classes.  This project will continue through next week and end with a presentation to their peers.

Math:
We are introducing rounding, adding and subtracting decimals to the thousandths place.  Multiplication of two digit numbers will be reviewed.  



Homework this week is a review of PEMDAS (order of operations).  It will go home on Tuesday, due on Friday.

Science
    This week we will be recapping the 6 kingdoms of living things as well as the 5 vertebrate classes.  We will be going more in-depth with  plants and the 4 main parts and their functions (roots, stem, leaves, flower).
    Students will also begin working on an animal creation project where they will create their own animal based on the characteristics of 2 or more vertebrate classes.  This project will continue through next week.
Math
This week in Math we will be working on subtracting decimals.  We will also review 2-by-2 multiplication and introduce multiplication with decimals  .  
HOMEWORK:
Homework this week is over adding and subtracting decimals.  This is due back by Thursday with a 5% deduction for each day late.

In Science this week, we will be recapping the 6 kingdoms of living things as well as vertebrates v. invertebrates and the 5 classes of vertebrates: Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, & Fish. Students will begin working on an animal creation project at the end of the week. There will be a science Quiz on Friday.

In Math this week, we will be learning how to compare, order, and round decimals to the thousandths

Please be looking for rocket facts to come home with your student to study. Any student who has completed all facts by Dec. 10 will get pizza or ice cream :)

Homework this week will be over writing decimals in expanded form. It is worth 17 points and due Thursday, Nov. 5

  • Language: Perfect tense verbs
  • Reading: We will be reading The Inventions of Hugo Cabret and reviewing mood, theme, and author’s purpose. Reading logs due Monday! They are worth 5 points.
  • Writing: Informational writing rough draft and published writing.
  • AR: Student should be around 30% of goal depending on what they are currently reading.
Sandusky:
  • Reading Logs due Friday, with parent signature.
  • This week we have started our Unit 2 novel study; Midnight Magic by Avi. It’s a historical fiction set during the Medieval era that helps students understand how the Renaissance Period started. We are reading 4 chapters a day, if your child is absent it is their responsibility to make up the missing work outside of class the following day.
  • Language: Perfect Tense, Subject-Verb agreement, and introduction to interjections,prepositions, and conjunctions.
Shultz:
  • Book logs and extra credit this week! Extra credit is for reading. Book logs are NOT extra credit--they are worth 5 points a week.
  • Reading and Language: We have started our novel study on Monday with a Mad Genius. It is very important for students to be here because we will be reading every day. We will also begin a writing project on a famous creative person.
  • AR: Students should be at 35% of their goals this week.
  • Read Aloud: No read aloud

10/12/15 Newsletter


Upcoming Events:

On Tuesday, October 13 at 9:00am we will be going to Nelson Hart Park to watch the big top be raised for the circus.

*In red folders today, you will find an envelope with the school’s return address. This envelope will eventually include a letter to a veteran and an invitation to our assembly. If you know of a veteran to whom you would like a note and invite sent, please return this envelope with his or her address on it. If you do not know of someone--no worries, we have names and addresses here we can send one along to--just please try to return the blank envelope. Thanks!

Science:
     We will continue working through our unit over Force, Motion, & Simple Machines.  This week we will be learning more about incline planes and levers.   Students will be doing experiments to see how the force and distance change when using these two simple machines compared to using no simple machine.
     Students will have an edmodo.com quiz this Friday covering many of the topics from this week as well as some review questions from previous weeks.  The items students need to know for the weekly quiz can be found by clicking the “Science” tab on my class website at nsiders.weebly.com
     The 6 steps of the scientific method will be on every quiz and test the entire year, please study these with your child so they are prepared.  Students who are still unable to correctly order the six steps will begin practicing them during Fun Friday until they are able to complete this task.

Math: This week in Math students will practice all the different ways to write decimal numbers as well as review decimal place value. This is the last week of the quarter so keep a look out for missing assignments to come home to be completed and returned.

Homework this week is a review of place value. It will be due on Thursday, October 15.

  • Language: Conjunctions and prepositions
  • Reading: We will be reading Leonardo Beautiful Dreamer and focusing comparing and contrasting two texts and objective and subjective point of view.
  • Reading logs due Monday! They are worth 5 points.
  • Writing: Informational writing graphic organizer and rough draft.
  • AR: Students should be at or around 100% by Friday. I have been sending home an AR update in Monday folders for the last couple of weeks. The highlighted part is the comprehension (should be above 80%) and the percentage is their goal.
Sandusky:
  • Reading Logs due Friday, with parent signature.
  • For reading this week we are working on informational main idea and supporting details. We will be focusing on Leonardo Da Vinci and the Renaissance Period during these lessons.
  • Language: Perfect Tense, this concept is pretty difficult for kids to master so we will be taking ‘baby steps’ and doing several charts to help with the introduction.
  • Sign up for Class Dojo if you haven’t yet! It’s a wonderful means of communication!
Shultz:
  • Book logs and extra credit this week! Extra credit is for language. Book logs are NOT extra credit--they are worth 5 points a week.
  • Reading and Language: We are reviewing all of our Unit 1 standards this week as we finish Wonder. We will be keeping a reflections journal which will allow us to practice through the remainder of the book.
  • AR: Students should be at 100% of their goals this week.
  • Read Aloud: We are finishing Wonder this week and next.
  • STAR testing will be on Tuesday. Please try to be here so that you do not miss class to makeup the test!
