Students will be practicing their address and tested on Friday.
Science:
This week we will be working on learning the 6 steps of the scientific method.  We will do two experiments (rolling balls down ramps) to practice the six steps this week.  The first one will be teacher guided.  The second experiment will be done in small groups with less teacher assistance (on a “give help as needed” basis).

There will be a quiz on Friday over the six steps of the scientific method.  A large part of this quiz is being able to memorize the order of the 6 steps.  Since this is such an important skill this year, ordering the 6 steps will appear on nearly every quiz and test the entire year.  The correct order is listed below.

  1. Observe and Ask Questions
  2. Form a Hypothesis
  3. Plan an Experiment
  4. Conduct an Experiment
  5. Collect Data & Analyze Results
  6. Draw Conclusions

  • Syllabus will come home Tuesday with Unit 1 information, please look through it with your child and sign and return the back page.
  • We will begin Figurative Language (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, idiom/adage/proverb, alliteration, and onomatopoeias, seek opportunities at home to point these things out to your children. Most students really struggle with literal and figurative meaning. Explain common idioms you use, “a penny for your thoughts”, “barking up the wrong tree”, or “best thing since sliced bread” are good places to start if you’re stuck!
  • We started our read aloud, Wonder, I encourage children to read along with our class, and not read it independently due to class discussions.
Shultz:
  • Reading: We are starting our year with reading standard RI5.1--Reading information text and quoting accurately when referring to the text. We will read short biographies with our teams this week and take notes for a project profile which we will complete in Google Docs.
  • Language: We will be looking for words that have a long A sound this week in our texts and all around us. As the week progresses, we will note the different ways it is spelled and choose some of our favorites to work on.
  • AR: Students will visit the library each Monday. We will be discussing AR goals, graphing our progress, and hopefully taking a test this week!
  • Read Aloud: Our first read aloud will be Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine
